Trier

Amid the medieval surroundings of Hauptmarkt square and in front of the mighty cathedral, festive wooden huts create a romantic Christmas atmosphere in Germany's oldest town, renowned for its Porta Nigra gate. There's delightful arts and crafts and lots more besides. Sweet treats, hot chestnuts, bratwurst or potato fritters, served with hot tea or glühwein help keep out the cold as you listen to sounds of the brass bands.
