Karlheinz Stockhausen, the enfant terrible of modern composition, was born in 1928 at Mödrath near Cologne. His unusual sounds, including electronics, attracted attention early on, as did his brilliant lectures and amazing productions of his own works. Between 1971 and 1977, Stockhausen was Professor of Composition in Cologne. He has since devoted himself exclusively to composition, culminating in the monumental, dimension-defying and, as yet, unfinished opera Licht (Light).
