Masters of Modern Age
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, 1880-1938
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, one of the main exponents of German Expressionism, ranks as one of the most significant German artists of the 20th century. A co-founder of the artists' group "Die Brücke" (The Bridge), his rise to fame was largely due to his female nudes in natural surroundings and his urban paintings of modern Berlin around 1900. The Brücke Museum in Berlin owns major works from the most important periods in Kirchner's artistic life. The New National Gallery in Berlin also has important holdings of his works. An entire room is devoted to the artist at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich. Other Kirchner masterpieces are on show in Cologne, Dresden and Düsseldorf.
