Masters of Modern Age
Georg Baselitz, *1938
He is regarded as one of the most significant contemporary artists. In the early 1960s his provocative choice of motifs caused a scandal and he suddenly shot to fame, although it was his unmistakable upside-down paintings of the mid-1970s that brought him international recognition. By inverting his motifs, he moved them into the realms of abstraction. Baselitz's works are exhibited at all the major museums and private collections in Germany and around the world. The Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich has important holdings of paintings from every major period of the artist's work. The contemporary art collection of the Frieder Burda Museum in Baden-Baden includes a series of paintings by Baselitz. An extensive group of his works is also on show at the Kunsthalle in Hamburg.
