Masters of Modern Age
Gerhard Richter, *1932
He is celebrated internationally as "artistic chameleon" and "master of ambiguity". He considers style as violence and works with a wide spectrum including "Blurred paintings", colour charts, pastose landscapes and grey monochromes. Like no other artist Richter knows how to make the picture element in his painting as representative for the art of the past 40 years and at the same time he shows new alternatives for abstract representation. For many he is one of the greatest painters of our time. His canvasses sell at top prices. In the collection of contemporary art of the new Frieder Burda Museum in Baden-Baden Richter is particularly well represented. Munich's Municipal Gallery at the Lenbach House and the Pinacothek of Modern Art both possess several typical works of the artist.
