As a leading German impressionist Max Liebermann, born in Berlin and inspired by his stay in Paris and Barbizon at the era of Manet and Corot, created a multitude of paintings in light colourfulness. The bulk of his oeuvre was produced in his hometown and in his summer cottage at Wannsee lake, a building that was inaugurated in 2006 as a museum. Very often he also painted Bavarian beer gardens. Himself a collector of French impressionists, Liebermann encouraged the director of the Hamburg Art Gallery to establish a collection of them. Today they also own important Liebermann masterpieces e.g. "The Game of Polo" and a self portrait. Moreover, in the Wallraf Richartz Museum in
Cologne the co-founder of the Berlin Secession is prominently represented in their collection of impressionists.
