Berlin Museum Island
The historic centre of Berlin's museum landscape lies at the northernmost point of an island in the River Spree. Situated in the heart of the city, it is one of the most important museum complexes in the world. Built between 1830 and 1930 in an area measuring less than a square kilometre, this "temple to the arts" is home to five major exhibition buildings with 19th century art and archaeological collections covering 6000 years of cultural history: the Pergamon Museum, the Old Museum, the Old National Gallery, the Bode Museum and the New Museum. This unique ensemble charts the development of modern museum design over the course of more than a century and forms an integral part of the cultural heritage of the 19th century, the era of education and learning.
