A landscape is born
The next few years will see the Lusatian Lakes - and a massive choice of leisure and holiday opportunities - taking shape between Berlin and Dresden.
15 new artificial lakes are gradually coming into being to add to Lake Senftenberg, Lake Knappensee and Lake Silbersee, which were created many years ago as a result of open-cast mining activity in the area. At the heart of the Lusatian lakes will be a chain of lakes linked by navigable channels. Many lakes will offer a variety of sports and leisure activities, whilst some areas will be devoted to tranquil natural pursuits and the conservation of rare animals and plants. Lake Silbersee and Lake Knappensee, which are beside the Upper Lusatian heath and lake biosphere reserve, have beaches for swimming, campsites and a diversity of fauna and flora right on the doorstep.
