An abundance of water, endless possibilities
60km west of Kassel is the Waldecker Land region with its river dams and reservoirs. Or sparkling blue "eyes", as they're affectionately known - idyllic recreation paradises.
Lake Edersee, which was dammed as long as a hundred years ago, winds its way spectacularly through a steep-sided, V-shaped valley before widening out near the dam wall into a vast, glistening expanse of water. Virtually every kind of watersport can be enjoyed here, from angling to waterskiing. Popular spots for swimming are the beach in Waldeck bay and Rehbach beach. A visit to the dam wall is fun for children too: the adjacent Aquapark has a mini Lake Edersee (1:200 scale) offering water play activities for all ages. An excursion to the Edersee wildlife park in Edertal-Hemfurth brings visitors face to face with wolves, lynxes and bison in spacious enclosures, whilst red deer, mouflons and fallow deer freely roam the park. The Kellerwald national park centre provides insights into the hidden wilderness of the Keller Forest.
