An ocean of possibilities
Lake Chiemsee has three islands and is Bavaria's biggest lake. It is a legacy from the primeval Sea of Thetis, which once covered almost half of Europe.
Lake Chiemsee - or "Bavaria's sea" - offers the perfect blend of entertainment, activity, nature and the arts. Its long, gently-shelving, sandy beaches are wonderful for families with children. Boats can be hired at virtually every resort around the lake, making it easy to get around Fraueninsel island and its abbey. Sailing and windsurfing courses, popular with families, are widely available. Young pirates can enjoy a taste of adventure on an exciting pirate trip and treasure hunt. Another way to discover the lake is on a canoeing tour. More than twenty campsites and numerous farmhouses in the Chiemgau region offer accommodation in the heart of nature. Children will be in their element at Marquartstein fairytale and adventure park with its summer toboggan run, water play garden, Gaudi gondola swing and witches' school - and at Ruhpolding leisure park, where they can enjoy the Bavarian Bockerlbahn train, the slide paradise and much more.
