Shallow bays, piers and seaside resorts
The state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is thinly populated and rich in natural beauty. Its coastline is lined by romantic seaside resorts with piers, sandy bays for swimming and flat, shallow lagoons or Bodden.
The Mecklenburg Bight is a place where tradition and modernity are exquisitely intertwined. Against a backdrop of buzzing beaches and grand seaside hotels, there are waterfronts lined with cafés, parents chatting happily away and children getting treated to ice cream. The Baltic's inland waters, which have no real waves or tides, offer fun for all the family, both in and on the water. A great favourite with children and adults alike is a ride on "Molli", the steam train that runs between the beaches of Bad Doberan and Kühlungsborn. Further south is the family resort of Rerik, which has cliffs and sections of flat coastline, a natural beach and woods. The shallow bays in the east of the region are typical of the Western Pomeranian landscape. The shallow waters between the coastline and the sandbars are ideal for learning a new watersport such as windsurfing or kitesurfing.
