Tip
A via ferrata is a mountainside trail where you climb ladders, cross bridges and use fixed ropes to pull yourself along rock walls. The version that runs above the Moselle and Saar rivers is only for sure-footed walkers with a head for heights. Another excellent choice is the Rioler Klettersteig, but it's only a warm-up compared to the Calmont Klettersteig. The climb here is not to be taken lightly, but a glass of wine at the end provides ample motivation. Short, but almost vertical in nature, is the ascent up Mount Altfels overlooking the River Saar.

Nature, adventure, culture and history
The route is essentially a dense network of 45 themed trails linking Koblenz, Trier, Palzem and Saarburg in the region around the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer rivers. Each one takes you to new places, offering excitement, adventure and a fascinating insight into local history and culture.
Some 2,000 years ago, the Romans recognised that the steep, sun-kissed slopes overlooking the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer rivers were perfect for growing wine grapes. Beautifully preserved wine presses, foundation walls of Roman country estates and the stone wine ship of Neumagen-Dhron shed light on the myths and legends of antiquity, as well as the hardship of everyday life in the Moselle region. These days, walking and wine are inseparably linked. It's hard to find a marked trail here that doesn't run past outstanding vineyards and the traditional taverns that serve their wines. Because of their prevalence on the wayside, few people choose to take a packed lunch. You won't have any trouble finding a place for a well-deserved rest that offers good food at a reasonable price. And if you don't fancy an alcoholic drink, you can always quench your thirst with grape juice.
The Mosel.Erlebnis.Route has everything a walker could ask for: Roman villas and temples, castles perched high above rivers, waterfalls and vineyards, flora and fauna, history and traditional crafts - and a steady stream of geological titbits. Trier, a centre of imperial power in Roman times, is the perfect place for a leisurely stroll, while the old-time Kanonenbahn to Zell attracts railway enthusiasts in droves. Learning all about the local myths and legends along the way is just as exciting as spotting butterflies, lizards, orchids, roses and herbs.
