Tip
If you want to see the added value that results from Wanderbares Deutschland premium status, get yourself down to the Weserberglandweg as soon as possible, then come back again in two or three years time. It's already a fantastic walk, but you'll be amazed at the improvement in such a short space of time in the area between Hannoversch Münden, Hamelin and Porta Westfalica.

A new premium trail in the making
The region around the Weser river is the ideal holiday destination, and culture and walking have always gone hand in hand on the outstanding Weserberglandweg.
Following the new boom in walking, Germany's image as a destination for walkers and hikers has undergone a lasting change. The specification of key criteria set out by the German Ramblers' Association and its supporters in the wake of the redesign and redevelopment of quality-certified and premium-grade trails has also led to changes in the way walkers use these routes. People are now looking for unspoilt trails and seeking out attractions, restaurants and special accommodation on detours and secondary loop trails. As a result, regions that feature classic trails and have always been popular walking spots have had to work hard to adapt to this new direction that walking is taking.
On the Weserberglandweg, keen walkers can discover first hand how an old classic is being transformed into a modern premium trail. Over the coming months, on the initiative of Weserbergland Tourismus e.V, a new connecting trail will be created and this will comply with the high quality requirements now in force. As the largest part of the trail by far lies in Lower Saxony, the 120km stretch of footpath that runs between Hannoversch Münden and Porta Westfalica will be the first section of the long-distance route to come under close scrutiny. Other sections in Hessen and North Rhine-Westphalia will be reviewed at a later date.
