Tip
The Vulkanpfad (Volcanic Path) takes walkers through a landscape like no other in Germany. Views from atop Bellberg hill reveal a landscape pockmarked by craters, and you don't have to be a geologist to enjoy the tour of crater rims and crater gaps, lava flows and lava caves and of the fossil-rich Kottenheim region. A visit to Rauschermühle information centre, Mendig Lava Dome or the Roman tuff mine in Meurin completes a wonderful experience.

In the Rhine-Moselle-Eifel region
Eleven premium circular trails designed in line with the latest criteria set out by the German Institute of Hiking have been created in the Rhine, Moselle and Eifel regions. Approximately 19 more of a similar standard are set to follow by the end of 2009.
These well signposted trails take walkers along narrow paths that allow them to explore a wide variety of landscapes with unspoilt forests, vineyard scenery and spectacular views while also showcasing the regions' cultural highlights. The one-day and half-day tours are designed especially for occasional hikers and those looking for a less strenuous walk. Castles and abbeys along the Rhine and Moselle join distinctive hilltops and the Laach crater lake in the Eifel region on the long list of attractions on offer.
Nowhere else in Germany can you learn about the fiery forces beneath the Earth's crust at closer quarters than in Mayen-Koblenz Volcanic Park. There is ample scope to explore and make discoveries but also to forget your everyday cares on circular trails designed to take you away from it all.
