Lakes in Germany
Volcanic maars - trademarks of the Eifel
Germany's maars are one of those insider's tips. Who doesn't like the idea of being able to say they have swum in a volcanic crater? That is exactly what maars are: small lakes of volcanic origin, and they have come to symbolise the Eifel region. Nine of the 100 craters are filled with water - perfect for swimming or going on a pedalo in summer. Brohtal Volcano Park and Lake Laach are well worth visiting and every year attract many vulcanologists, geologists, nature lovers and people who enjoy walking. Maria Laach Abbey, part of the park, is a must.
