Altmühl Valley nature reserve: Fossil hunting with a hammer and chisel
On foot, by bike or in a boat: the Altmühl Valley nature reserve, situated in the heart of Bavaria, north of the Danube, offers magnificent natural sights combined with fascinating cultural history. Along the Limes, the former border wall of the Roman Empire, you can discover plenty of traces from Roman times, either for yourself or by visiting one of the museums or excavation sites. The quarries of the Altmühl Jurassic region on the other hand are the scene of a particularly exciting form of treasure hunting, where you can have a go at finding spectacular and sometimes valuable fossils with a hammer and chisel.
