Public funds have been used to transform an important monument of industrial heritage into a multifunctional park which now ranks alongside Cologne Cathedral as one of the most important attractions in the region of North Rhine-Westphalia. The structures of this gigantic industrial cathedral from the early 20th century have their own very special charm, and even take on a romantic aspect at night when bathed in the glow of the light show designed by artist Jonathan Park. At the heart of the former plant is the blasting halls complex comprising the compressor room, pumping hall and casting hall, where the blast furnace once spewed molten pig iron out onto the floor. The architecturally striking blasting hall has been transformed into a 700-seat theatre. The most impressive structure is the central power plant which is 170 metres long, 34 metres wide and 20 metres high. In 2002, all the former industrial halls were converted into multifunctional performance venues which are hired out for events. Where blast furnaces once glowed day and night, today an exciting new park provides entertainment for all ages, 24 hours a day.
