Every day 600,000 litres of salt water trickle through the huge salt-evaporation works in the heart of the town, creating a fresh sea breeze. Bad Salzuflen has lots to offer: reinvigorating health programmes, idyllic wellness breaks, cultural highlights and a range of sports and leisure activities. Visitors can stroll in the 120 hectare spa and country park in the heart of the town, one of Germany's most extensive parks.
The historical old quarter is also well worth seeing. Exquisitely decorated, half-timbered 16th century buildings with elaborate carved gables provide an picturesque backdrop for an interlude at one of the many cafés or restaurants. The salt-evaporation works beside the spa gardens is the only one of its kind in Europe: salt water from depths of up to 1,000 metres trickles down it both inside and out. The saline mist chamber is wonderfully relaxing, with its gentle music and colour-changing “starry sky”.
